Fiery Redheads

When I was 18, I had three days in a row where different older men were sexually inappropriate towards me. This behaviour included a humiliating comment by a teacher in front of my class and one man simply approaching me, staring and rubbing his groin in a cafe. I love my Mum but when I told her afterwards, her reaction was to gently suggest that my dyed red hair might give men the impression I was “a bit of a goer.”

I snapped back that that was rubbish. In retrospect, I don’t think she was completely mistaken. Like many people, I simply believe that it should not be the case; people assuming the right to be aggressive based on another’s appearance is a widespread problem and must be acknowledged as unacceptable, both socially and legally.

10 years later, my hair is brighter red than ever and I just returned home after my first Slutwalk. Thank you for a heartwarming and positive event - hope it’s the first of many!

Why SlutWalk London?

"I am walking because I was raped. I am walking because two thirds of people who answered a survey would say I am to blame for my rape. The only person to blame is the man who raped me.I am so angry with the lack of justice, the hundreds and thousands of rapists who walk away. I am angry because the survivors of rape are victimised again and again. If we report it (I did) we are forced to re-live it in horrendous detail several times over. We feel violated again when the CPS decides not to prosecute after all and he simply walks away. We are not victims. We were victims, for a moment in time. Now, we are survivors."
